Born in St. Petersburg in 1892, Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté after the French pronunciation of his initials, was famous for his magazine covers and fashion designs for Harpers Bazaar, as well as exotic costumes and stage sets for theatres such as the Folies Bergére. He continued working in his unique Art Déco style until his death in 1990.
